Dress Codes
Dress Code Policy
The Dress Code Policy outlines class-specific expectations of student appearance and attire.
The Dress Code Policy applies to all PURE students.
The Dress Code Policy states that every class has prescribed appearance and attire expectations. In all classes, jewelry is not to be worn, and nothing is to be added to the dress codes, such as accessories. The specifics of the dress codes for each class can be found below, and also with each class description.
In dance, a dress code ensures that a teacher will be able to see a dancer’s alignment and positioning so corrections can be made and good habits instilled. Form-fitting dancewear is a requirement in all classes where techinique is important to learning. Strict dress codes, as in Ballet, are a world-wide tradition in which we are taking part, but it also helps teach students discipline and focus. Dancers feel like dancers when they dress the part, and dress codes minimize distractions for teachers and students alike, prevent select dancers from standing out, and help give classes a unified look. If a student comes to class and is not adhering to the specific dress code, he/she will be sent home with a friendly reminder to review dress code policies.
In music and drama, a dress code, that is much less prescriptive than in dance, is established to ensure that all students are able to learn and grow with full free movement of their bodies. Restrictive clothing can prevent proper breathing, reduce oxygen intake, and restrict self-expression. For some exercises and activities it is important that an instructor can observe posture, technique, or position so excessively baggy or layered clothing is to be avoided. If a student comes to class and is not adhering to the specific dress code, he/she will be sent home with a friendly reminder to review dress code policies.
